I got a package in the mail today. And it needs little or no introduction. It took slightly over a month to get here and the date reads January 31, 2006 - a time when I was feeling pretty isolated and uncertain. So this card was purchased and written during a pretty difficult time (I was also quite ill the first few weeks coming back) and my parents sent it - knowing that it would reach me at the right time, in the right place - my heart. While email and instant messaging have taken care of our immediate needs and responses, real, material mail - when we finally receive it - reminds of a not too distant past, bringing us back if only for a moment, nudging us to reflect on how far we've come, in such a short amount of time.
Here's a transcription of the card:
A Valentine's Day Promise to My Daughter
When you are happy,
I'll love you with a joyful heart.
When you are sad,
I'll love you with a heart made a little heavier by your tears...
When you are right,
I'll love you with a heart filled with pride.
When you are wrong,
I'll love you with a heart that has learned acceptance.
When you succeed,
I'll love you with a cheering heart.
When you fail,
I'll love you with a heart that rewards the efforts you've made.
When you dream,
I'll love you with an encouraging heart.
When you give up,
I'll love you with a heart that is strong enough for both of us.
When you are simply you,
in whatever mood or phase or your life,
I'll love you with all my heart and more than you'll ever know.
I heart you mom and dad
